The best way to explore Namibia and its wonderful nature is by camping in the wild, sleeping under the stars, and waking up in the African bush. Camping in this amazing country is unlike any other outdoor experience you've ever had.
A self-drive was the best way for me to see its most amazing places and beautiful wildlife, while I had the freedom to stay where I wanted.
The country has some great spots to camp and as I was lucky enough to explore the country twice in the same year, I made a list of all the best campsites in Namibia that I personally like the most.
So, if you are planning a road trip itinerary and want to know where to find the best places to stay then read on.

Urban Camp in Windhoek
If you are planning a self-drive in Namibia and looking for a great place to stay when you arrive in Windhoek? Then Urban Camp is probably the perfect campsite in Namibia to stay at.
Urban Camp has a great vibe, with cozy and well-designed glamping tents, a BBQ garden, and an outdoor pool, making it the perfect place to start or end your road trip in Namibia.
TIP: Have dinner in the famous Joe’s Beerhouse which is a short walk from this amazing campsite in Namibia.
Tana Safaris Bush Camp in Otjiwarongo
Tana Safari Bush Camp is the perfect campsite in Namibia between Etosha and Windhoek when you plan to visit the Waterberg Plateau or the Cheetah Conservation Fund.
The campsite offers budget and luxury tents for a very affordable price including breakfast and amenities. The surrounding area is beautiful and makes it the real African bush experience.
Okaukuejo Camp – Etosha National Park
Distance from Windhoek: 432km
Okaukuejo Camp offers breathtaking sunsets and fantastic wildlife experiences. During a Namibia self-drive, this popular campsite in Etosha National Park is a great place to start game drives through the National Park.
The best part of this Okaukuejo Camp is that it looks out over a permanent waterhole that attracts much wildlife during the day and it's the best place to watch incredible sunsets after a full day exploring.
Definitely one of my favorite campsites in Namibia.
Olifantsrus Campsite – Etosha National Park
Distance from Windhoek: 567km
One of the best spots to camp in Namibia if you love to discover the untouched side of Etosha National Park is by far the Olifantsrus Campsite. It is located on the West part of the park and you'll need to drive along corrugated roads but it makes it perfect for some wildlife spotting.
The Olifantsrus Campsite features a wooden walkway that goes to a waterhole and a lookout point outside the campsite's fences and it has only 10 camping spots with power outlets and no accommodation, so bringing your own tent is a must.
I recommend renting a 4x4 in Namibia because this part of the park just opened, so it's still untouched and a good place to see wildlife.
Hoada Campsite – Damaraland
Distance from Windhoek: 540km
Camping at the Hoada Campsite is like going back in time. This magnificent campsite in Namibia is set in a picture-perfect location amongst large granite boulders in Damaraland's natural wilderness.
Each campsite features a self-catering kitchen, a shower heated by wood, an open-air toilet, and a unique private setting. There is a swimming pool and a bar with stunning views from the sunset deck, so make sure you arrive before sunset.
My favorite campsite in Namibia is by far Hoada Campsite, which is in a remote part of Damaraland. If you want to explore this area, you should definitely rent a 4x4 in Namibia.
Madisa Camp – Damaraland
Distance from Windhoek: 376km
From the most impressive campsite in Namibia to an unforgettable one, Namibia has it all. Madisa Camp is one of my favorite campsites in Namibia, and it's a real hidden gem. In my opinion, the trip is well worth the long drive and rough dirt road.
Madisa Camp is located near Twyfelfontein, amongst stunning rock formations and it is an area where Namibian Desert Elephants frequently pass, so you might have a good chance to see them.
The open-air shower, the barbecue area, and the bathroom area with the outdoor sink on stilts are the things that make this camp so unique. In the main area of Madisa Camp is a beautiful pool where you can relax after a long drive or a day full of adventure.
TIP: Drive gently and have a spare tire on the rough road between Swakopmund and Madisa Camp. I had a flat tire and saw more breakdowns. along the way.
Spitzkoppe Community Restcamp – Spitzkoppe
Distance from Windhoek: 269km
Spitzkoppe Community Restcamp is a place that will take your breath away as it is one of the most beautiful places in Namibia. With incredible views, unique rock formations, lovely sunsets and the most magical nights, this campsite in Namibia will make you speechless.
There is no running water and only drop toilets so bring enough drinkable water with you. Due to the large space between each campsite, you will have the feeling of being alone in the middle of the desert.
Sossus On Foot – Solitaire
Distance from Windhoek: 265km
Camping in Namibia at Sossus on Foot is an unforgettable experience because of its peaceful setting and breathtaking landscapes in every direction.
Located only 40 kilometers from both Solitaire and Sossusvlei, this campground is ideal for exploring the area. The campsite's owners provide guided tours to spot and learn more about the desert wildlife.
The campground is an easy dirt patch where you can stay with a car and rooftop tent or just set up your tent. Shared bathrooms and showers are provided in the building next to the camping area.

Sossus Oasis campsite – Sesriem
Distance from Windhoek: 321km
Located at the park's main gate, The Sossus Oasis Campsite is a superb spot for camping in Namibia's Sossusvlei National Park. Nothing beats unwinding at the end of a day exploring and hiking up the dunes with a good book and a glass of wine in front of a campfire as the sun sets.
Each campsite includes its own bathroom with flush toilets and showers, kitchen with sink, barbecue grill, and electrical outlets. In addition, there is a small pool where guests may unwind after a day of sightseeing, a convenience store to stock up, and a gas station.
TIP: Solitaire is the only place between Sesriem and Walvis Bay to get fuel
A little Sossus Campsite – Sossusvlei
Distance from Windhoek: 305km
About 40 kilometers from Sesriem, the Little Sossus Campsite in Namibia is a peaceful and serene place to stay. While the campsites are on one side of the road, The Little Sossus Lodge, with rooms, chalets, and a restaurant, can be found across the street.
At each campsite, you'll find a private shower and toilet, a power source, and a kitchen where you can cook your own meals. There is also a convenience store, a bar, and a garden area where guests can relax or take a swim in the lovely swimming pool. The breathtaking natural beauty of the desert was probably the best part of my stay at this campsite.
Felix Unite Provenance Camp – Noordoewer
Distance from Windhoek: 807km
The Felix Unite Provenance Camp is a fantastic location for camping in Namibia, featuring both shared and private restrooms and barbecue facilities. It is a great place to stay to explore the Fish River Canyon and The Orange River, which form the natural boundary between South Africa and Namibia.
In addition, this is an excellent location in Namibia for going river rafting on the Orange River, and for those of you who want to relax, there is a magnificent swimming pool and bar that looks out over the Orange River.
Zambezi Mubala Campsite
Distance from Windhoek: 1200km
Located in the corner of the Caprivi Strip near the Zambezi River, the Zambezi Mubala Camp is a truly hidden spot. Each grassed campsite comes with an outdoor self-catering kitchen and shower facility.
It is a great spot for fishing, bird watching, and relaxing at the river. The staff is amazing and happy to help with any tour or information you need. It is also a good place to stay in Namibia if you combine your trip with Botswana.
Namibia is the ultimate destination for a camping adventure or a wildlife safari and the best way to discover the most stunning and beautiful locations is with a self-drive in Namibia.
This gives you the freedom to either stay on a campsite in the wilderness or at a beautiful safari lodge near one of the many highlights.
