A few months ago, I entered one of the largest photo contests in the world and the largest in the southern hemisphere, Nokia’s 2021 Photographer of the Year.

It was the first time I decided to enter a competition with such a huge number of talented people, with over 3000 photographers participating, I was quite nervous and excited at the same time.

As there were many different categories to choose from such as Aerial, Black & White, Portrait, and Wildlife, I felt that Landscape is the category that probably best defines my work, so I participated in the category Landscape with 2 different photo series that I took during my road trip through Australia.

Photographer of the year award: My Entries

“Serenity” – The Hopetoun Falls

Even though I didn’t make the top 20, both entries were awarded the “Highly Commended” and “Commended Award” in the Landscape category, which is way more than I expected.

The first photo series is called “Serenity” and showcases the beauty of Hopetoun Falls, one of Victoria’s most famous and popular waterfalls located in the Great Otway National Park.

“The Opera House” – Sydney Harbour

For the second entry, I submitted the photo series from the most iconic building in Australia and maybe even in the world, The Opera House in Sydney.

After almost traveling around Australia for 2 years, I had finally the privilege to visit and wander around Sydney Harbour. And obviously, I searched for a nice spot to capture the sunset at the Opera House.

The entry of “The Opera House” got rewarded as Commended Award of 2021 in the category Landscape.

These awards mean a lot to me as it gives me even more motivation and courage to pursue my dreams but I am also curious about your opinion and feedback, so let me know what do you like (or not) about these entries.

Also a big thanks to all my friends, family, and loved ones for the massive support and help!

THE CAMERA GEAR I USED

I never go out without my camera and many people ask me which gear I use. So to make it quite easy, I listed all the gear I used for this trip below.

Most of the time, I travel with the Sony A7III and the Sony 24-105mm/f4 as my primary lens but depending on the location, I change to another setup. However, I love the Tamron 17-28 to shoot in the big cities.

For both entries of the photographer of the year award, I used the Sony A7III with the Tamron 17-28mm and the Tamron 70-180mm.
